What bedding?

Post by Alicia on Mon Oct 11, 2010 2:06 pm

I use woodshavings in the guinea-pigs hutches in the summer and vetbed in the winter (I find the vetbed gets too hot in the summer) but this winter I'm moving Billy into the shed in an indoor cage (all the others will go in the shed in their hutches so will use the same bedding) but because Billy's cage isn't as enclosed as his hutch (he won't be able to get out of the cage but he can easily kick woodshavings out of it) and I don't have a piece of vetbed big enough to fit the cage, I was thinking of using fleece. Has anyone here used fleece? What do you think of it? What bedding do you use in your guinea-pigs cages?

I used to use fleece. Most of the time I had My piggies free-ranging in My room. But when I used the indoor cage I made cage liners, two towels thick with a layer of fleece on the top. I also put a litter tray in the pigs favorite poop-corner with newspaper pellets in it. (like yesterdays news, back 2 nature or breeders choice) I had a boy with allergies to most wood shavings, plus He was a texel X absinnean so it would get all caught in his fur, lol. But wood shavings would work well in a litter tray too.

My pigs were well trained, it made things very easy for Me. Smile No reason why fleece shouldn't work for you though, just needs to be cleaned a bit more regularly than shavings.

Ok thank you, I think I'll try it and if it doesn't work I'll have to think of something else. I'm going to make his cage this weekend Smile

I use fleece bedding, its great.
I did use woodshavings before this and hated them.

Just put down about two layers of towels, and only one layer of fleece. Before using brand new fleece wash it three times so it will wick. This means so the urine will pass through it quickly. Then just spot clean it daily.

I find it great, Im using it in a pet store cage and only need to clean it twice aweek. When I get the c&c cage I think it will only need to be done ever 6/7ish days about!

In the start I did need to clean in every second day which was annoying but I then used more towels and it lasted for longer! Smile
