Pellets or Mix?

Re: Pellets or Mix?
It depends if your guinea-pig is a selective eater or not. If your guinea-pig picks bits out of the food it is best to feed them pellets because all the nutrition is in a pellet form and prevents selective feeding, but if they aren't selective feeders its fine to feed them a mix. I prefer pellets for my guinea-pigs because I know they are getting all the nutrition they need. If you feed them a mix at the moment, watch them when they eat to see if they sort through it and pick bits out, this will help you decide whether they should be fed pellets or mix.

Ok thank you. I think I'll move them onto a pellet food because I'll feel happier knowing they are getting the right nutrition.

I've got this problem too with my guinea-pigs. They are on Gerty Guinea-pig and the amount of bits I chuck away is unbelievable. My mums guinea-pigs are on Pets at Home nuggets and they seem a bit healthier and alert and they're the same age as mine.

My guinea-pigs used to only eat the green bits, and leave the seeds, but now my guinea-pigs go nuts for pellets, Billy runs towards his bowl and eats it all in about 10 minutes

Re: Pellets or Mix?
Its not just because of selective feeding that mix feeds are bad for guinea pigs. There is all added fat and sugars in it and it is really fatty. It is sort of like the mix food is a cheesburgers and fries while the pellets are a salad haha! Go with the pellets type its way better for them even if they do not selective feed.

Can I just say its not all just down to if they are selective eaters or not. The mixed food has all added sugars in it and is way more fattening and bad for them than the pellets food. I would never, ever recomend mix food to anyone. Please go with pellets

Well, I feel like pelletts are so plain and just boring. If I was a guinea pig I'd want a mix food with all the diffrent tasts. My guinea pig eat mixed food and they arn't even close to over wieght.

It does seem boring; half a cup of pellets, a cup of veggies, and unlimited hay, but that's what they thrive best on.
Another reason to avoid mixes, is that they often have things in them, which aren't actually good for guinea pigs, i.e., most mixes have corn in them. Here's guinea lynx's info on pellets.
I like Guinea lynx's article on the subject.
Hope you find it of interest! :D
